The North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT) was authorized by Congress in 1980. This premier footpath stretches more than 4,600 miles across seven northern states from upstate New Hampshire to its western terminus at Lake Sakakawea State Park.
The North Country Trail is part of the National Scenic trail system and is a work in progress. The trail will stretch for about 4600 miles linking communities, forests, mountains, and prairies across seven northern states. Already, more than 2100 miles have been certified off-road. Additional miles follow shared paths, and some road walks yet remain.
The spectacular scenery of the North Shore of Superior, including seven state parks, has earned this scenic route a national designation as an “All-American Road.” Small shoreline towns offer restaurants serving local fish and produce as well as unique shops and art galleries.
